Standing Against Hate

-Barrick helps ADL combat hate in all its forms

By Jolie Brislin, Anti-Defamation League Nevada Regional Director

Hate is on the rise. We saw it most recently in New Zealand and Pittsburgh, but it is happening in our own backyard in Nevada, specifically in our schools. In the 2017-2018 school year, the Clark County School District had more than 10,000 reports of bullying. According to the National Bullying Prevention Center, less than 20% of students intervene when they see bullying happen to their peers. These statistics are terrifying and one of the critical areas where the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) is trying to make a difference.

Founded in 1913, ADL is guided by a timeless mission that still endures more than 100 years after it was written: to stop the defamation of the Jewish people and secure justice and fair treatment for all. Today, ADL continues to fight all forms of hate with the same vigor and passion, and ADL is always the first call when acts of anti-Semitism occur. A leader in exposing extremism, delivering anti-bias education and fighting hate online, ADL’s ultimate vision is a world in which no group or individual suffers from bias, discrimination or intolerance.

ADL cannot do this important work alone. It takes partners like Barrick Gold to make it a possibility. With Barrick’s generous support, ADL has successfully expanded its ability to partner with schools throughout the state to offer the framework, support and resources they need to implement anti-bias and bullying prevention education work including No Place for Hate®. Barrick also partners with ADL on other education initiatives, including the Barrick Gold Imagine A World Without Hate Poster Contest, ADL’s Walk Against Hate, and parent workshops and student assemblies.

With Barrick’s investment, ADL Nevada has been able to reach more than 100,000 students through our education programming including No Place for Hate®. This is a self-directed program available to schools across the United States, designed to help all school stakeholders take the lead on improving and maintaining school climate, so all students can thrive. One of the unique aspects of the program is that schools determine, with the guidance of ADL education professionals, how to best address issues specific to their school through a needs assessment process and training. The activities created by each school bring students of all walks of life together to learn more about one another and build a true community that promotes inclusion and celebrates the diversity that we see in our schools today.

“Barrick has been a steadfast supporter of the Anti-Defamation League’s critical efforts to combat hate and bullying through education programs in Nevada,” said Leslie Maple, Barrick’s manager of communications and corporate affairs.Standing Against Hate 1

Each year, our education partners work tirelessly to create dynamic activities. The schools come together at ADL’s Walk Against Hate to celebrate their achievements in front of the entire community. They are presented with a banner to hang proudly at their school to show their commitment to creating a safe and respectful school.

ADL’s Walk Against Hate, presented by Barrick Gold, will take place on April 28 at Springs Preserve. This fun, multi-cultural, family-oriented event celebrates diversity and inclusion. Participants come from every corner of our community including schools, civic organizations, houses of worship, and corporate partners to show that hate has no place in Nevada.

“The Walk Against Hate brings together our diverse community and moves people from being a bystander to an ally. Barrick is committed to supporting the ADL’s No Place for Hate program and other education-based learning opportunities in order to create a better future for all Nevadans,” said Maple.

Last year, more than 1,000 people attended ADL’s Walk Against Hate, and we invite everyone to join us on April 28 to take a step in the right direction and take a stand against bigotry, hate, and discrimination. For information and to register, visit www.walkagainsthatelv.org.

ADL is proud to partner with Barrick Gold in supporting Nevada’s education initiatives. We thank them for standing tall to combat bias and prevent bullying, which continues to leave a lasting impact on our schools, students and overall community.
